Award-winning and best-selling author Lisa Reinicke will return to Wichita for the third year in a row as a guest author at Botanica, the Wichita Gardens on June 27.
Reinicke, born in Wichita and raised in Shawnee, Okla., is the author of five children’s books and a chapter book memoir, and will be featured at Botanica’s Teddy Bear Picnic and book launch for her latest book “Wilhelmina’s Wish,” awarded by Mom’s Choice Awards as Best Picture Book in the category of growing up personal growth in March.
At the picnic and launch, parents and children are encouraged to bring their favorite teddy bear and picnic meal to listen to Reinicke read “Wilhelmina’s Wish” and make a craft with Wilhelmina and her fairy friends. Reinicke’s book will be available for purchase and signing, according to Botanica’s website.
Wilhelmina’s Wish tells the tale of a fairy named Wilhelmina with a uni-brow and her journey of accepting her outward appearance.
Reinicke said she hopes Wilhelmina’s story will resonate with children and their parents that “it’s what’s on the inside that matters.”
“When I look at a friend, I don’t see their outside,” Reinicke said. “When I see them, I see their insides and that’s the part that I love.”
Reinicke’s children’s books often tell tales concerning social issues and her personal insecurities, she said. Featured in her stories are issues such as self esteem, selfishness, obsessive compulsive disorder eating issues, and more.
“We’re teaching our kids to be able to play with other kids and accepting others for their differences,” Reinicke said.
Reinicke said she looks forward to returning to Wichita and Botanica for the launch.
“The people are fantastic in Wichita — they’re so welcoming and we’ve just had a lot of success there,” Reinicke said. “I love the way the parents and children interact there — I hope that I can be ... a good part of their family.”
Reinicke’s next book is currently being edited, and is set to be released in September. The running title is “No Eggs for Harry,” and tells the tale of Harry the troll and Pip the tender-hearted dragon, she said.
The Teddy Bear Picnic and Wilhlemina’s Wish book launch will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 27 at Botanica, 701 Amidon St.
Reinicke will begin the book reading at 6:30 p.m.
Botanica’s regular admission prices apply for the event— $9 for adults, $8 for military and seniors, $6 for youth ages of 3 to 12, and free for children under 2.
